SEO Tips for Maryland Companies

Posted on: February 5, 2012

Search engine optimization or SEO refers to techniques used to elevate a company’s rankings and/or visibility in the organic results of search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. There are [literally] thousands of techniques that, collectively, make up a potential SEO strategy—which you use and the extent to which you use them depends on a myriad of factors. These factors include, but are not limited to: your goals, the competitiveness of your industry, your website’s age and current rankings, and many more.

When it comes to SEO, the best piece of advice I can offer is to “do the right thing.” What do I mean by this? There are thousands of SEOs and SEO consultants employing a variety of tricks and techniques meant to “game” the search engine’s formula and artificially boost their client’s rankings. While these techniques might give you a boost in the short term, they are generally not going to offer you the best long-term ROI.

Your best bet is to focus on content. Simply put: Write content that people will want to read. Write content that your visitors will truly find valuable. Some SEOs talk about link-building. The reality is, when you write great content, the links will naturally follow. In fact, you can use the number of links you receive as a proxy for the quality of your content. Write content that kicks ass!

As you write, try to come up with new and compelling ways that you can establish yourself as an expert in whatever it is that you do. One great way to do this is to give away free information. That’s right, give away free information. Many business owners cringe when they read this because they envision people taking their tips and implementing them on their own—without paying the business owner. Certainly, some of your visitors will be “do it yourselfers,” but you probably NEVER would have gotten their business anyway. Anyone that has run a business for a significant amount of time knows that a) implementation and execution separate the pros from the joes and b) information about every subject multiplies so fast, that by the time the “do it yourselfers” implement one of your freebies, there will be 10 new things you’re doing that they haven’t a clue about!

A Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Tip for Maryland (MD) Business Owners

Don’t look at Google’s search results pages as paid ads and organic (free) listings. View the page as a virtual Monopoly board. The more listings (properties) you have, the more visitors, leads, and sales you’ll receive! The most effective search engine marketing strategies combine BOTH paid search and search engine optimization (SEO) activities.
